DNA Testing for Multiple Sclerosis
This Test is not Available
Genetic health testing is a physician ordered test in the USA. The physician in question will need to authorise the testing. IBDNA does not provide this test to USA residents.
Multiple Sclerosis is often more simply referred to as ‘MS’, which is a term that has become synonymous with a range of serious degenerative symptoms. Although there is no known cure for multiple sclerosis at this present time, the condition is not always as debilitating as some of its more serious symptoms might suggest. In fact, whilst multiple sclerosis will affect a patient for his or her entire lifespan, there is no evidence to suggest that the condition directly affects longevity. Affecting some 85,000 people in the UK, multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological condition in young adults and causes Myelin, which is the substance that surrounds individual nerve fibres in the central nervous system, to become damaged, which in turn results in a disruption of messages sent to and from the brain to various areas of the body. Typical symptoms of multiple sclerosis include muscle spasms, limited vision, fatigue, pain and cognitive problems.
Genetic predisposition DNA testing for multiple sclerosis is important if the condition is to be better understood, which is necessary for finding new forms of treatment and perhaps even a cure. Early diagnosis of the condition would also be made more efficient if it were possible to identify a genetic predisposition to multiple sclerosis. In this respect, it is thought that the causes of multiple sclerosis are both environmental and genetic, so there is unlikely to be a definitive genetic blueprint that explains all cases of the condition. Evidence suggests that there is a slightly increased chance of an individual developing this disease where a relative is also affected by the condition.
