Sibling DNA Testing in Massachusetts
The history of this state is legendary, from where the pilgrims landed in Plymouth; to where the first gunshots rang out of the American Revolution in Boston; there is Worcester with its majestic War memorials and Springfield with its quirky basketball museum, Hoop Heaven.
Worcester or ‘Worm Town’ as it is affectionately known, was an old wealthy manufacturing centre during the industrial age, they invented barbed wire and the envelope as we know it here. There are numerous historical blue collar diners who have served up breakfast for generations and you feel as if you are going back to an earlier age when you visit here.
The War Memorials include the World War II Memorial and The Vietnam Veteran’s memorial in Green Hill Park. The latter is a well thought out and inspiring tribute to the Vietnam veterans and includes stones engraved with the letters written by the fallen Vietnam soldiers to their families, these are particularly poignant and moving. A more curious museum is the American Sanitary Plumbing Museum, the world’s only plumbing museum. There is also the Worcester Art Museum which has some hidden gems worth seeing and acquired during a golden age of industry.
Boston has a mighty reputation for being the ‘hub of the universe’, with its universities, rich history, grand architecture and cultural institutions, this city shines with a glory only a few cities are bestowed with. The puritans founded Boston, in search of religious freedom. In fact the ‘sons of freedom’ were born in Boston and they rabble-roused until the War for Independence. Today Boston is filled with the results of these lofty ideals and is one of the most forward-thinking cities, backing same-sex marriage and universal healthcare, it also hosts the most avant-garde architecture and urban planning projects.
The most influential element would be the educational institutions here where over the years Boston’s colleges and universities have lured scientists, writers and philosophers who have thrived in the city’s ever evolving culture. There are sporting events, film festivals, music scenes, art galleries and coffee shops, hip clubs and Irish pubs of course.
The best time to visit is late spring and early autumn, when the parks are filled with flowering trees or colourful leaves. You can even go whale watching in Boston of all things, there is a 3-hour whale watching tour on a high speed catamaran which takes you out to Stellwagen bank, the East Coast’s most famous whale watching destination.
Springfield is also worth a stop especially if you love basketball. Aficionados of the game flock here to visit the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame or ‘Hoop Heaven’. The museum is home to 40,000 sq. ft. of basketball history. It is a shrine to Dr.Naismith who invented the sport more than a century ago. The Springfield Quadrangle hosts five major museums; the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, Museum of Springfield History and Connecticut Valley Historical Museum and finally for family fun the Dr.Seuss National Sculpture Garden which is a sculpture park devoted to the stories of Springfield born Dr Seuss author of children’s books such as “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and “The Grinch”. Bright Nights at Forest park in Springfield is a fantastic light experience with almost three miles of Christmas lighting displays that span from the ‘North Pole Village’ to the ‘Seuss Land’ inspired by Dr Seuss’s books.
