Wilmington is a unique place well worth a visit and is a veritable cultural melting pot of African Americans, Caribbeans and Jews. There is also a vibrant art scene which encourages tourists to visit. Check out the Delaware Art Museum for the Edward Hopper paintings and walk down to the riverfront which is all re-developed and lined with sparkly restaurants and cafes. It is also home to the most stunning building: the Delaware Centre for Contemporary Arts. The best place to stay is the Hotel Du Pont which is very luxurious, its namesake the DuPonts being one of the most successful American families of the industrial age. For a beer head over to the Iron Hill Brewery, a huge space on many levels inside a brick warehouse. You’ll find micro brews and hearty pub food.
The North Carolina Mountains are great for climbing, rafting, hiking and camping. The Appalachians in the western part include the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge to name a few. The Cherokee came here to hunt and the Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in the 18th century to try to find a better life. Nowadays it offers the opportunity to follow craggy trails and take in deep breaths of fresh air with jaw droppingly good photo ops at every turn. Visit Asheville and stay in the Omni Grove Park Inn, which looks like an arts and crafts stone lodge but is a lot more than that, in fact it is a luxury stone pool spa and offers an indoor waterfall among other treats with mountain views from some of the more expensive rooms.
